About OHFL

What is a Village?

Olney Home For Life, Inc. is a Village. The “Village” concept was started in Beacon Hill, a neighborhood in Boston. It is built on neighbors-helping-seniors so they can age in place by getting help with a variety of their needs.   As the U.S. population ages, the Village concept is becoming a rapidly growing nationwide movement with hundreds of Villages offering a variety of supportive services to local seniors (e.g., transportation, social, light chores). A study in Montgomery County of those 50 and above showed that over 90% desire and intend to continue to live in their own homes and in their neighborhoods. As these seniors age they will need some level of support to live safely and happily. Olney Home For Life, Inc. is a cost-effective, and rewarding way for citizens in Olney to provide—and receive—those services.

Our Mission

OHFL’s mission is to establish and maintain an organization that facilitates neighbor-to-neighbor assistance on a voluntary basis for local area seniors. Our efforts concentrate on services associated with transportation, communication and socialization that enhance the quality of life for seniors by helping them maintain their mobility, health and social connections as they age in place. We provide a no-fee alternative to costly transportation options while affording community members– both seniors and others– meaningful volunteer opportunities.

Our History

In 2011, founding members recognized that there was a need for transportation and other senior services in the area. They selected the Village model, founded in Boston, as the structure to deliver these services, free of charge. The Greater Olney Civic Association (GOCA) was very supportive and a partnership developed with other organizations such as MedStar Cancer Center to support the transportation needs of their senior patients. While transportation assistance has been our primary service, we have expanded to meet additional needs of the senior community in Olney and surrounding areas. OHFL has received the GOCA Service Award, as well as County Council and MD Senate commendations.
